What is EXIF data?
EXIF is hidden metadata stored inside every photo your iPhone takes. It records everything about when and how the photo was taken — including your exact location.
What's stored in a photo?
Date and time taken
GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude)
iPhone model and iOS version
Camera settings (aperture, shutter, ISO)
Focal length and lens info
Flash status
Image dimensions and resolution
Colour profile and orientation
Privacy warning
When you share photos on social media or by email, this metadata often travels with the photo — including your GPS location. Use our Remove EXIF tool to strip it before sharing.
FAQ
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No — metadata reading runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your photo never leaves your device.
Why is there no GPS data?
GPS is only embedded if Location Services was enabled for the Camera app. Screenshots and photos shared via some apps have GPS stripped.
Does it work with HEIC files?
EXIF is read from the JPEG-compatible metadata block inside HEIC files. Most HEIC fields are supported.
What if no metadata appears?
Some apps strip EXIF before saving. Try an original photo straight from the Camera Roll for best results.
