How to export your Live Photo
1
On iPhone: Open the Live Photo in Photos → Share → AirDrop or Save to Files. The .MOV file is the live portion.
2
On Mac: Export the Live Photo from Photos app: File → Export → Export Unmodified Original. This gives you the .HEIC and .MOV pair.
3
Upload the .MOV file here and convert to GIF or MP4 for sharing anywhere.
GIF vs MP4 — which to choose?
MP4 gives you the best quality and smallest file size. Works on all modern platforms (Twitter, WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack).
GIF is universally supported everywhere — older platforms, email clients, and apps that don't support video. File sizes are larger and quality is lower.
What is a Live Photo?
Live Photos capture 1.5 seconds of movement before and after the shutter — creating a short video paired with a still image. The live portion is stored as a .MOV file alongside the .HEIC photo.
FAQ
Why can't I share Live Photos directly?
Live Photos use Apple's proprietary format. Most non-Apple platforms only see the still image, not the motion. Converting to MP4 or GIF makes them universally shareable.
Can I convert using the iPhone Photos app?
Partially — you can share a Live Photo as a loop or bounce effect via iMessage. For GIF or MP4 export, a converter like this is needed.
