What is EXIF data?
β οΈ When you share an iPhone photo, you may also be sharing your exact GPS location, home address, the device you used, the date and time, and camera settings β all hidden inside the file.
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in every iPhone photo. It includes GPS coordinates, altitude, the exact device model and software version, date/time, camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), and more.
FAQ
Does removing EXIF affect image quality?
No β the image pixel data is completely unchanged. Only the metadata is removed. The visual quality is identical.
Can I turn off location in Photos on iPhone?
Yes β Settings β Privacy & Security β Location Services β Camera β set to "Never." This prevents GPS from being recorded at all.
Does sharing via iMessage strip EXIF?
iMessage compresses images, which removes most metadata. However, sharing via email, social media DMs, or file transfer often preserves all EXIF data.
