How to use the WebP to GIF converter

This tool converts WebP images to GIF format using a pure JavaScript GIF encoder with median-cut colour quantization — no uploads, no accounts, no app install. GIF is universally compatible with every platform, social network, and messaging app. Works on any Android phone in Chrome.

Steps

  1. Tap the drop zone and choose a WebP image from your Android gallery or Downloads folder.
  2. Choose colour quality — 256 colours gives the best possible GIF quality. Use 128 or 64 for smaller files, ideal for sending by message.
  3. Tap convert to gif — the conversion runs instantly in your browser, no upload required.

FAQ

Why convert WebP to GIF?
Will the GIF look worse than the WebP?
GIF supports a maximum of 256 colours per image, while WebP supports millions. Photos with many colours will have reduced quality. Logos, icons, screenshots, and images with solid colours look great in GIF with no visible loss.
Can I keep a transparent background?
Yes, but GIF supports only binary transparency — each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Partial transparency from the original WebP will be thresholded. For smooth transparency, use PNG instead.
Does this work on Android without an app?
Yes — works in Android Chrome with no app required. Tap, convert, download, share.
Why might the GIF be larger than the WebP?
WebP uses far more efficient compression than GIF. A GIF can be 2–5× larger than the same WebP. If file size is critical, consider PNG which offers better compression and quality than GIF.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser. Your images never leave your device and are never sent to any server.
